Center City Series

These photographs in an ongoing series of the individuals in and around Rittenhouse Square, one of Philadelphia's affleunt neighborhoods.

The images are about the homeless who are mainly down and out on their luck or those who have tried to make their own luck but failed to live up to their expectations. I found the various individuals, some who have become long term subjects of my work, to have fallen out of society's favor as a whole due to the stereotyping of the homeless.

Through my photographs I have established not only a relationship of trust with these individuals, but have come to understand some of their hardships and attitude. Not all of them are what we perceive them to be. Every now and then hope provides some respite to them and at least one works up the nerve to choose a way out.
